South East Asia Regional Lead

Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR)

I am the Chairperson and former Secretary General of the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR). This is a coalition of organisations working on urban poor housing and city development in Asia. In the KNOW programme, ACHR and I will help to coordinate local partners in a number of selected countries and cities.

ACHR will participate actively in research and study processes to identify the specific challenges associated with urban inequality that emerge in each of the selected cities.

Over the past 40 years, I have been working extensively with the urban poor on housing development and slum upgrading in Thailand and other countries across Asia.

During my years working as the (former) Director of the Community Organisations Development Institute, Thailand (CODI), I implemented the national city-wide community upgrading programme, mobilising urban community processes. This took place across 300 cities, using a new community finance and revolving fund mechanism. I am also very experienced in various community-led development processes from rural development activities to community-led welfare and disaster rehabilitation activities.

With ACHR, I have supported city-wide upgrading activities in 215 cities, across 19 countries. These strategies will be used in our KNOW partnerships where we will support the networking of communities, other local stakeholders, and local academics to develop knowledge and research capacity working toward the SDGs and the New Urban Agenda.
